vitamin D and health
The UK Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) published their report 'vitamin D and health' on 21/7/2016. Their press release states that it is now recommended that everybody (in the UK) over the age of 1 should take 10 micrograms (=400IU) vitamin D daily and babies from birth to 1 yr of age should be given 8-10 micrograms (=340-400 IU) daily.
Pre-existing vit D NICE guidelines (PH56, Nov 2014) recommend vit D supplementation for certain 'at risk' groups. People with 'low or no sun exposure' are regarded as an at risk group (this would be most of us then for much of the year?). I am looking forward to the planned NICE update later this year.
